CHAPTER 11

When she got home, Della decided maybe she should stop looking into what happened. It already had her second guessing a woman that, before Della’s suspicions, could have become a new friend, or at the very least, a friendly acquaintance. The last thing she wanted to do was suspect the woman of murder, especially since it wasn’t known if Winston had died of natural causes or had been murdered.

But here she was, thinking about it all the same. The case was doing just what the last one had, causing her to look at friends and neighbors as though they might be guilty. She hated that side of this, but at the same time, she’d rather know than be in the dark about what was happening around her. She used to see Clover as a quaint and harmless little town, but maybe she’d been wrong.

Maybe a small town could be just as deadly as a big city?

When Della thought that, she quickly pushed the investigation from her mind. Maybe she really was getting in over her head. Besides, she couldn’t keep looking at fellow Clover residents as though they were murderers. She was supposed to be putting herself out there and making friends, not ostracizing herself more than she’d already managed to do.

That night when Della was getting ready for bed, she was still thinking about what Melissa said. A woman younger than her and Winston who had a crush on him with the name, Leslie. Mark telling her that Leslie hated Winston, but when she’d talked to Leslie, she’d made it sound like she’d hadn’t even known him.

It seemed like too much of a coincidence to Della. Still, she didn’t want to head right back over to Leslie’s house and ask her why. She’d have to see what she could turn up. There was still a possibility that there had been someone else named Leslie. Was it Leslie Chapman who had gone from having a crush on Winston to hating him? And if so, why?

“I guess people always have their reasons for not telling the full truth, but if there’s nothing to it, then why lie?” Della asked Moose as they headed to the bedroom. Once there, Moose went to his usual spot beside the bed while Della slipped beneath the covers.

The only thing she could assume was that Winston really did have another girlfriend and that was Leslie. He could have broken things off with her and then she got angry. Della couldn’t think of anything else that might make sense for the change in attitude if it was the same Leslie. If she talked to anyone else, she’d see what they thought about the possibility of another woman being in the picture. Had Winston been a two-timer or a committed man? There was only one way to find out.

“Guess I can’t give up investigating yet. Not while I still have so many questions. But for now, we’re going to bed,” Della said to Moose, yawning as she pulled the covers up tight and made herself comfortable.
